Public Nest Excavations

The Public Nest Excavation program provides a unique opportunity for the public to observe a  permitted biologist inventory the contents of a hatched sea turtle nest. The program begins with a short presentation describing the species of sea turtles commonly found nesting on Florida beaches with a focus on biology, the nesting process, and local nesting statistics. Threats to sea turtles and the importance of the “Dark, Flat and Clean” initiative are also discussed. Following the presentation, our biologists inventory the contents of a nest that hatched naturally prior to the event, displaying the nest contents and explaining the importance of the inventory process and measuring reproductive success. Afterwards, prior to 9 am and if conditions allow, any hatchlings found in the egg chamber are released according to FWC guidelines.

All ages welcome. No registration required. Programs will be announced 3 days prior to the event.. There is NO GUARANTEE that hatchlings will be observed.

Jensen Beach Public Nest Excavations:

In partnership with Florida Oceanographic Society, EAI offers public nest excavation programs in Jensen Beach on select Friday mornings throughout July and August. These programs will take place just south of Jensen Public Beach (beachside of Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa). Please park at Jensen Beach public access and walk south to get to the event.

Delray Beach Public Nest Excavations:

In partnership with the City of Delray Beach and Sandoway Discovery Center, EAI offers public nest excavation programs in Delray Beach on select mornings throughout July and August. These programs will take place at various locations between Delray Public Beach and Atlantic Dunes Park depending on the nest location.

Nighttime Turtle Walks

The Nighttime Turtle Walk program provides a unique opportunity for the public to observe a nesting turtle under the direction and guidance of knowledgeable and permitted sea turtle biologists while ensuring minimal disturbance to the turtle. The program includes a thorough presentation covering sea turtle biology, the nesting process, and threats to sea turtles. Concurrently, a turtle scout surveys the beach for a loggerhead sea turtle in the appropriate stage of the nesting process. Once such a turtle is located, the group is led to the beach to watch the turtle lay her eggs. The cost of this event is $20.00 per person plus a processing fee through the Eventbrite website. All proceeds go toward sea turtle research.

You will receive a confirmation email after making your reservation. If you have any immediate questions please contact lauren@ecological-associates.com
