EAI has conducted comprehensive lighting surveys of entire county coastlines for numerous municipalities to identify lights that are non-compliant with the lighting standards of each municipality’s Lighting Ordinance. Artificial lights have been shown to reduce sea turtle nesting on otherwise suitable nesting beaches and cause disruption of the sea turtle’s ability to find the sea.
EAI uses sub-meter accurate Trimble Geo 7X GPS units fitted with cameras and laser rangefinders to precisely locate and photograph non-compliant lights, enabling evaluation of their effects on sea turtles and the beach. Interactive maps are produced showing the GPS location of each light source and the location on the beach from which they were observed. With these
maps, clients are able to click each location on the beach to bring up information about the lighting violation along with a photo of the light source. In addition to these interactive maps, written reports are generated with photos and aerial images, which may be used by property managers and Code Enforcement officers to identify non- compliant lights.
EAI also develops recommendations for modifying each non-compliant light to provide sufficient light for human safety and security while ensuring the light will not detrimentally affect sea turtles. EAI works directly with property managers to ensure modifications meet the specific needs of each facility. Follow-up lighting surveys are conducted to verify compliance with current lighting regulations.
